Symposium proposals for the XVII Brazilian MRS Meeting can be submitted from October 31st, 2017 to January 31st, 2018.

The meeting will take place at the Praiamar Natal Hotel & Convention Center, located at the Ponta Negra Beach, Natal, RN, from September 16th to 20th, 2018. The meeting chair is Prof. Antonio Eduardo Martinelli (Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte).

Proposals may be submitted by any PhD professor or researcher affiliated to a Higher Education and/or a Research Institution in Brazil or abroad, in any current field of Materials Science and Engineering. A submission form is available at http://sbpmat.org.br/proposed_symposium/.

The following data is required:

– Description of the symposium scope
– List of topics of interest
– Tentative list of invited speakers
– Names and contacts of symposium organizers

Young B-MRS member receives 4 awards from international scientific societies in 2017.

Navadeep Shrivastava at the E-MRS Spring Meeting 2017 presenting the awarded poster.

So far this year, B-MRS member Navadeep Shrivastava has won four awards for his work on materials with magnetic and luminescent properties developed in the context of his doctoral research being conducted at the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA) under the guidance of Professor Surender Kumar Sharma.

In February, Shrivastava was selected to receive a registration exemption at the E-MRS 2017 Spring Meeting, within an existing agreement between B-MRS and the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS). The award allowed the participation of the doctoratal student in the event, which was held in Strasbourg (France) from 22 to 26 May 2017.

At the E-MRS event, Shrivastava won an award for the poster he presented at the symposium entitled “Luminescence and Magnetic Behavior of Color Tuned LaF3:RE3+ (RE= Ce, Gd, Eu) Nanoparticles”. In addition, he presented another contribution at symposium V (“Green emitting magneto-luminescent iron-oxide/ZnS coated by codoped lanthanum fluoride nanomaterials”), which drew the attention of the audience, initiated a collaborative relationship with a group from the Université de Strasbourg (France) and expanded his network of professional contacts. “I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the E-MRS 2017 Spring Meeting,” says Shrivastava.

In third place, the doctoral student was one of the winners of the 2017 Bernhard Gross Award, awarded by SBPMat to the best works presented by students at the annual events of the society. Shrivastava was awarded for the work “Facile synthesis and magneto-luminescence study of aliance of iron oxide and NaGdF4:RE3+ into nanoentity”, presented in an oral session at symposium B. The award was delivered on September 14 this year in the city of Gramado, during the closing ceremony of the XVI B-MRS Meeting.

Finally, the UFMA PhD student has just been selected to receive a travel assistance from the IEEE Magnetics Society to present two papers at the 62nd edition of the International Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, called MMM 2017, to be held in Pittsburgh in November of this year.

Professor Rodrigo Fernando Bianchi (Brazilian Federal University of Ouro Preto, UFOP), scientific director of B-MRS, represented the society at the General Assembly of IUMRS (International Union of Materials Research Societies), held on August 27, 2017 in Kyoto, Japan, during the IUMRS-ICAM 2017 (fifteenth edition of the International Conference on Advanced Materials).

B-MRS is one of fourteen materials research societies in the world that currently make up IUMRS. The other societies are from Africa, Australia, China, Singapore, Korea, Europe, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Thailand and Taiwan.

According to Bianchi, the meeting made clear the interest of several associations to collaborate with Brazil.

In addition to representing SBPMat at the meeting, Professor Bianchi presented, at the IUMRS-ICAM 2017, his research group’s work focused on developing printed radiation sensors. The event attracted about 1,900 participants from dozens of countries.What most attracted the attention of B-MRS scientific director were presentations on the application of materials science and characterization techniques in the conservation of cultural resources (paintings , monuments and etc.). “That is, the cultural valuation within the area of materials – very important for the conservation of artistic, historical and cultural heritage of a country, and which is present in Kyoto, cultural capital of Japan. Brazil could follow the same trend!” said Bianchi.

At the event, Professor Ado Jorio (UFMG), also a member of the Brazilian materials community, delivered a plenary lecture on inelastic light scattering in carbon nanostructures.

Message from the chair

Dear participants,
We look forward to seeing you at the XVI SBPMat Meeting in the city of Gramado (RS), which will be held from September 10 to 14.
Sixteen years after the first annual meeting, our event impresses with its large number of abstracts and participants and the quality of the scientific contributions that will be presented in posters and oral sessions. This year, we will have 22 symposiums, 1 workshop and 1 tutorial. We will bring together a prolific group of authors and speakers from Brazil, Latin America and from many places in the world, everyone with the common goal of sharing ideas and new perspectives on a wide range of scientific and technological topics. We will also have 7 plenary lectures given by the most prestigious scientists on cutting edge issues in Materials Science and a lecture by the renowned Brazilian scientist João Alziro H. da Jornada at the opening of the meeting.
I am sure the event will offer a unique opportunity for collaboration and interactions. It will provide the means to having contact with leading scientists in their fields, as well as with friends and collaborators. At the closing of the event, the awards from SBPMat and ACS Publications journals will be bestowed to the best student works.
I trust the event will be stimulating and inspiring for all of you. As always, our aim is high in order to promote the development of Materials Science and Technology.

Overview

Presentations: Approximately 2,000 works will be presented in the oral and poster sessions at the event’s 23 symposia.

Participants: To date, more than 1,300 people from 20 countries and all regions of Brazil are registered to participate in the event.

Thematic range: Characterization, manufacture and modification of various materials (polymers, metals, composites, hydrogels, nanomaterials, biomaterials). Applications energy, aeronautics, health, electronics, bioelectronics, photonics, plasmonics and photocatalysis, among other areas. Production environmental impact and safe use of some materials.

Exhibitors: 24 companies and institutions will be in the exhibition booths.

Registration: Registration will remain open until the last day of the event. The B-MRS annual membership can be done during the event registration. Notice: The registration cost for the event + SBPMat annual fee is less than the registration cost for the event for non-members. See here.

Sunday 10th. Tutorial How to Produce and Publish High Impact Papers. It will be delivered by Professor Valtencir Zucolotto (IFSC-USP) and PhD Christiane Barranguet, Publishing Director for Materials Science at Elsevier. More information and registration (free of charge), here.

Sunday 10th. Memorial lecture “Joaquim da Costa Ribeiro”. This year the traditional B-MRS tribute will be bestowed to Professor João Alziro H. da Jornada (UFRGS), who will give a lecture on new perspectives in Materials Science and innovation in Brazil. Monday 11th. Plenary lecture of Hans-Joachim Freund on heterogeneous catalysis. Freund (h-index= 97) is Director of the Fritz-Haber Institute of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft Society (prestigious institute in Berlin, Germany, dedicated to surfaces and interfaces), where he leads a research group on heterogeneous catalysis. Monday 11th. Plenary lecture of Alexander Yarin on agro-waste nanofibers produced by solution blowing, and their applications in health and environment. Yarin is Distinguished Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA, where he coordinates a research laboratory in fluids and solids mechanics. Learn more.

Tuesday 12th. Plenary lecture of Susan Trolier-McKinstry on piezoelectric films for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). The scientist currently chairs the Materials Research Society. Professor at Penn State (USA), she leads a group with extensive experience in piezoelectric materials and their use in MEMS. Learn more.

Tuesday 12th. Plenary lecture of Kenneth E. Gonsalves on materials for fabrication of integrated circuits of less than 10 nm, using extreme ultraviolet lithography. The Distinguished Professor of IIT Mandi (India) has developed R&D projects for big companies in the field. Learn more.

Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th. Technical lectures. During two mornings and afternoons, 13 lectures will address in depth various techniques of materials characterization and modification and the latest innovations in the area. Learn more.

Wednesday 13th. Plenary lecture of Kirk Schanze on conjugated polyelectrolytes and their applications in energy and biomaterials. Editor-in-chief of ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces and Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) in the USA. His research group is a pioneer in synthesis and applications of polyelectrolytes. Learn more.

Wednesday 13th. Plenary lecture of Frédéric Guittard on super-hydrophobic materials inspired by Nature. Prof. Guittard and his group at Nice Sophia Antipolis University (France) are among the most cited in the world on hydro-and oleophobic surfaces with useful applications such as antifreeze, antifouling and antibacterial materials. Thursday 14th. Plenary lecture of Pulickel Ajayan on challenges and opportunities on Nanotechnology for the materials of the future. Professor at Rice University (USA), h-index= 144, he is the author of prominent contributions in the world of nanomaterials, such as filled nanotubes, paper battery and ultra-dark nanotube carpet. Thursday 14th. Students awards ceremony. The best oral and poster of each symposium presented by undergraduate and graduate students will be announced and awarded. The best 6 contributions of all the event will receive prizes from ACS Publications journals. The authors must be present at the ceremony to receive the awards. Learn more.

New journal: npj Flexible Electronics.

Publishing high-quality papers related to flexible electronic systems, including plastic electronics and emerging materials, new device design and fabrication technologies and applications, npj Flexible Electronics is a new online-only, open access journal.

npj Flexible Electronics is part of the Nature Partner Journals series, launched by Springer Nature as part of the Nature Research portfolio of journals, and published in partnership with Nanjing Tech University. The journal is led by Editors-in-Chief Professor Donal Bradley (University of Oxford, United Kingdom) and Professor Huang Wei (Nanjing Tech University, China).

npj Flexible Electronics supports fundamental studies that improve understanding of the science relevant for flexible, stretchable and conformable devices, and research that aims to achieve new technologies that might lead to low-cost flexible devices with advanced functionality.

B-MRS at the annual meeting of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC).

The Brazilian Materials Research Society (B-MRS) was present at the 69th Annual Meeting of the SBPC (Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science), represented by one of its board members, Professor Glaura Goulart Silva (UFMG). A free event and open to society, the annual SBPC meeting has been held since 1948 in public universities in different Brazilian states. This year, the meeting was held at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), in Belo Horizonte (state of Minas Gerais), from July 16 to 22, with the central theme “Innovation –Diversity – Transformations.”

“The 69th Annual SBPC Meeting was an area of resistance to the dismantling of science and technology in Brazil,” declared B-MRS scientific director, Goulart Silva. “The Brazilian community actively involved in science, of all ages, origins and functions, has united in a clear message: science and education are investments, it is on this basis that we can build a future for our people,” she said.

As part of the event’s program, Professor Goulart Silva participated in the roundtable “Carbon Nanostructures: The Next Technological Revolution?” which took place on July 17 from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The other members of the roundtable were Professor Aldo Zarbin (UFPR), President of the Brazilian Society of Chemistry (SBQ), and Professor Marcos Pimenta (UFMG), coordinator of the INCT of Carbon Nanomaterials and of the Center for Nanomaterials (CTNano), of which Professor Goulart Silva is vice-coordinator.

Carbon nanomaterials, their structure, properties and applications were presented at the roundtable, which had a large audience and many questions raised, focusing on their potential to contribute to various technological areas. “We discussed how nanotechnology can impact a new technological era that has sustainability as a fundamental requirement,” informed the scientific director of SBPMat. “The members and participants of the roundtable expounded on a joint vision that a wide range of nanomaterials will occupy relevant spaces in future technologies. Not only carbon nanomaterials, but also that carbon nanotubes and graphene are indisputably very important systems in this set,” she says.

According to Goulart Silva, all participants in the session emphasized the need for investments in science and technology in Brazil, so that the advances made in areas such as nanotechnology continue.
