B-MRS announces new coordinator of the University Chapters (UCs)Program.

Prof. Newton Martins Barbosa Neto
Prof. Newton Martins Barbosa Neto

Professor Newton Martins Barbosa Neto of the Brazilian Federal University of Pará (UFPA) is the new coordinator of the University Chapters (UCs) Program of B-MRS. He follows in this role Professor Rodrigo F. Bianchi, who has coordinated the program since its foundation in 2014.

The objective of the UCs program is to bring together graduate and undergraduate students in Materials Science and Technology and related areas, and to encourage and support these teams to carry out activities that complement university education, such as the organization of events and interaction with similar groups from Brazil and abroad. Eight units of UCs have been created within B-MRS to date.

The board of B-MRS wishes Professor Barbosa Neto a good job and thanks Professor Bianchi for his work.

Words by the new coordinator (Newton Martins Barbosa Neto)

“I believe that assuming the coordination of B-MRS’s University Chapters program (UCs) is a major task. UCs are necessary and strategic bridges between today’s and tomorrow’s materials community as they provide students, in the spirit of learning by doing, the opportunity to evolve through the exchange of experience and discussion of problems related to materials research. Another important aspect of UCs is that they give students the opportunity to develop teamwork skills, which are more than necessary for the leaders of tomorrow, especially in a multidisciplinary area such as materials. It is in this spirit, and with the participation of our community, in Brazil and around the world, that I believe in the development of good work in the coming years that should continue to do what has already been done.

These are some of the main challenges we face: 1) Continue with the policy of creating new UCs, 2) Promote increasing interaction, and 3) Effectively organize the fields of action of UCs. The UCs have great action potential in activities such as: scientific dissemination, promotion of events, training of future researchers, among others. All of these things need to be done in an increasingly efficient and synergistic way, drawing the greatest number of results with the least amount of resources available. In other words, we need to do what we already do as materials scientists in our laboratories”.

Works of B-MRS member awarded in a conference of refractory materials.

Prof. Victor Carlos Pandolfelli (UFSCar).
Prof. Victor Carlos Pandolfelli (UFSCar).

Professor Victor Carlos Pandolfelli (DEMa – UFSCar), a B-MRS member, is co-author of two papers awarded at the 41st Congress of the Latin American Association of Refractory Manufacturers (“41 Congreso ALAFAR 2018“) held in Medellín, Colombia from September 30 to October 3, 2018.

These works received the first and second prize for the best works of the conference. According to Professor Pandolfelli, “they address the issue of energy conservation in processes using high temperatures, which is the most direct and practical way to help the environment”.

Founding member receives the Felippe Carneiro Medal.

Angelo Fernando Padilha, full professor at the Polytechnic School of USP (EPUSP), was honored by the Brazilian National Commission of Nuclear Energy (CNEN) with the Felippe Carneiro Medal, aimed at distinguishing personalities who stood out in the development of peaceful nuclear energy applications. The award was held on October 10, during the ceremony of the 62nd Anniversary of CNEN, at the headquarters of the entity, located in Rio de Janeiro. Padilha was president of CNEN from 2011 to 2015.

In 2000, Padilha participated in the committee that founded B-MRS.

Message from the chair

Dear speakers and panelists,

I take advantage of the forthcoming 17th Annual B-MRS Meeting to welcome, on behalf of the Society and the Organizing Committee of the event, all the participants. From September 16 to September 20, the city of Natal will welcome you with open arms for a journey of technical and scientific dissemination and exchange of experiences.

With the active participation of the community, we have prepared a multidisciplinary, diverse and comprehensive program. We thank the 76 members of the community who organized the 21 symposia of the meeting, divided into 6 major thematic areas. In addition, we will have 1 workshop and 1 challenge proposed by Boeing. The programming of the meeting is composed of 1,666 submissions, resulting from the work of 4,617 authors, reported and approved by 185 reviewers. Approximately 1,000 participants have already confirmed their presence. This is the breadth and strength of our community, whose resilience allowed the 17th Meeting to take shape, even in a period of enormous challenges regarding the promotion of research in the country.

During the meeting, 8 plenary lectures will be presented. There will be two daily lectures, given by internationally renowned researchers, specialists in frontier issues in Materials Science and Engineering.

To mark the opening of the meeting, we have prepared a pleasant cultural and social program. But, the highlight of the night will undoubtedly be the memorial lecture of Prof. Fernando Galembeck, who needs no further introduction. Wednesday night will hold a separate attraction, a party embellished by the sea breeze. The closing ceremony will feature the awards of B-MRS and ACS Publications for the best student works.

Last but not least, I would like to thank B-MRS’s confidence in choosing Natal as the venue for its 17th meeting, the support of our sponsors and the administration of UFRN, the incessant and hard – but very enjoyable work done by the local support team, composed by UFRN students, and by the tireless and competent performance of the B-MRS team.

I look forward to your presence. It will be a pleasure to meet you in Natal.

Professor Mônica Alonso Cotta (Gleb Wataghin Institute of Physics, UNICAMP) has undertaken the position of associate editor of ACS Applied Nano Materials, a scientific journal of the American Chemical Society publishing house (ACS Publications), which was launched in early 2018. The journal is interdisciplinary and covers topics related to nanomaterial applications.

Professor Cotta, who holds her second term as scientific director of B-MRS and was chair of the XV B-MRS Meeting, joined in July of this year the team of associate editors of the journal, formed by four other scientists from the United States, South Korea, China and Singapore.

The Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (AABC) in partnership with the Brazilian Materials Research Society (B-MRS) will launch the special volume “Materials Sciences for a Better Future”.

aabc-sbpmatAccording to the editor, Frank Crespilho, professor at the São Carlos Institute of Chemistry (IQSC) at the University of São Paulo (USP) and a B-MRS member, this is a great opportunity to celebrate the success of Brazilian research in the area of Materials. Crespilho adds that the theme of the special event is in tune with the title of the memorial lecture that professor Fernando Galembeck will deliver at the XVII B-MRS Meeting, an event to be held at Praiamar Natal Hotel in Natal (Brazil), from September 16 to 20 of 2018. Furthermore, this special volume is part of the continuation of the centenary celebrations of the Academy.

SBPMat members and other researchers are invited to submit their full original works through the SciELO journal’s website, from August 9 to November 9, 2018, indicating in the submission and Cover Letter their participation in the special volume.

AABC publications have no cost to authors and can be accessed freely. The AABC have been engaged in the publication of special volumes, covering all areas of science. Recently, the journal has published articles for the special “Brazil: Frontiers of Chemical Sciences,” which can be freely accessed at: http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?script=sci_issuetoc&pid=0001-376520180002&lng=en&nrm=iso.

Prof. Victor Pandolfelli reelected for the advisory board of the World Academy of Ceramics.

Prof. Victor Carlos Pandolfelli (UFSCar).
Prof. Victor Carlos Pandolfelli (UFSCar).

B-MRS member Victor Carlos Pandolfelli, professor in the Department of Materials Engineering at the Federal University of São Carlos (DEMa-UFSCar), was reelected as a member of the advisory board of the World Academy of Ceramics (WAC) to fulfill his second 4-year term (2018 to 2022). The board will include the Brazilian researcher, along with Professor Gary Messing (Penn State) and Dr. M. Singh (NASA), as representatives of the Americas.

In order to be part of the WAC advisory board, it is necessary to be a member of the Academy and be elected by vote of the members of the same region of the planet (in this case, the American continent). The names of the most voted must be endorsed by the presidency of the Academy. To be a member of the WAC, one must undergo a selection process that includes nomination by two effective members, evaluation of the application by a peer committee selected by the Academy, and final approval by at least ten of the twelve members of the advisory board.

According to Professor Pandolfelli, some of the activities he will hold in the council over the next four years are: reviewing the WAC admission rules, defining the members who will participate in the new candidate selection processes, defining the topic and speakers for technical presentations and awards in the scientific forum for members of the Academy.

The inauguration and first meeting of the new council will be held next June in Perugia (Italy).

History of Materials Research

Thirty years ago, 3 professors from universities in the interior of São Paulo decided to jointly create an interdisciplinary laboratory to install equipment that was boxed for lack of physical space. Thus the LIEC-UFSCar was born, seed and current headquarters of the CMDF. Hundreds of basic and applied research work, collaborative projects with industry, spinoff companies, and extension and dissemination projects have emerged from the laboratory, in addition to many trained researchers.
