Bernhard Gross Award.  Contributions submitted by authors who are undergraduate or graduate students can apply for the SBPMat award. To participate in the selection, the author must submit an extended abstract in addition to the conventional abstract. The deadline is August 14. Featured paper

An international team of researchers presented in the journal Nano Energy, a contribution to the development of materials for supercapacitors. Using a simple scalable method, the authors produced a composite of polypyrrole, graphene and zirconia and tested its electricity storage performance. The material demonstrated potential to be used in supercapacitor electrodes. See our news article.
People from our community
We interviewed Vinícius Galhard Grassi, leader of polymers research in Brazil at Braskem. PhD in Chemistry, Grassi has been working for 16 years in R&D in polymers in the business environment, and has seen several products developed by him and his collaborators in the market – an incredible pleasure, he says, which justifies all efforts.  Learn more about this researcher’s career, the products he developed and his vision of R&D in companies. Profs. Edgar Zanotto (UFSCar) and Oswaldo Alves (Unicamp) are part of the scientific council of the Serrapilheira Institute, the first private Brazilian research support institution. Learn more.

XVI B-MRS Meeting/ XVI Encontro da SBPMat

City: Gramado (state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil).

Final date: 10-14 September 2017 (not 24-28 as previously reported).

Call for symposia proposals: Researchers with a doctorate degree associated to institutions in Brazil or abroad can submit symposia proposals on any topic related to Materials Science and Technology. The call is open until January 31, 2017. Submission must be done through the online form. 
B-MRS – E-MRS agreement. B-MRS members can have symposium-related participation and organization support at events of the European society. More information here.
B-MRS at events in Asia. The president of B-MRS represented the society at two events in the area of Materials in China. Here he explains the relationship of the Brazilian society with the Asian societies and comments on the event that brought together leaders to discuss the subject of materials for sustainable development, focusing on construction materials, ocean engineering, batteries, among other topics. Featured paper

In an article published in Scientific Reports (Nature), a group of researchers from institutions in the Brazilian state of Paraná reports the synthesis, processing, characterization and applications of films of graphene/nickel hydroxide nanocomposites. The team presents an innovative manufacturing method and shows that the nanocomposite outperforms pure nickel hydroxide in batteries, sensors and electrochromism. See our story about the paper. 

 
People from the community
We interviewed the Argentine scientist Galo Soler Illia, who is one of the most cited and awarded researchers in his country, in addition to perhaps being the most famous reference in Nanotechnology among journalists and lay public. Soler Illia made significant contributions to understanding the formation mechanism of (nano) particles and to the synthesis of materials with highly controlled porosity, among other subjects. Currently, in addition to teaching at UBA and being a researcher at CONICET, Soler Illia oversees a nanotechnology research and development institute and is an advisor to the Presidency of Argentina and several institutions in Argentina and Brazil. Learn more about this Argentine scientist and his intensive interaction with Brazil.
Professor Elvira Fortunato, from the University of New Lisbon (Portugal), received the Blaise Pascal 2016 Medal in the Materials Science category on November 19 in Brussels (Belgium). The award of the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC), was bestowed on Professor Fortunato in recognition of “the outstanding originality and creativity of her research in the field”, in which she made contributions such as the invention of the paper transistor and developments in transparent electronics. Established in 2003, the prize had never before been awarded to Portuguese scientists. Elvira Fortunato, who has a close relationship with the Brazilian Materials community, delivered a plenary lecture at the SBPMat Meeting (B-MRS Meeting) this year.  
History of materials research in Brazil

In December of this year, Brazil’s first laboratory dedicated to the study of vitreous materials celebrates its 40th year, very satisfied with its achievements. In addition to generating a scientific production of impact, the laboratory was instrumental in the dissemination of glass science, technology and engineering in the country, while creating an international research environment in the city of São Carlos. Featured paper
A team of scientists from Brazil developed “nanomanipulations” in samples prepared in Israel, composed of serpentine-shaped carbon nanotubes over crystalline quartz. Through experimental and theoretical analyzes, the scientists were able to measure the strain suffered as a result of nanomanipulations and to understand phenomena related to the adhesion of nanostructures over materials such as quartz. Researchers condensed the study’s findings in a mathematical equation applicable to various materials. The results of the study were recently published in Nano Letters. People in the Materials community
We interviewed the winner of the Capes Doctoral Dissertation Award in the Materials area, Edroaldo Lummertz da Rocha, PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the Brazilian Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). Edroaldo became interested in science because it would enable him to help people somehow.  In his doctoral research, he worked on the interface among Materials Science, Computer Science and Biology to study the interaction between biological cells and nanomaterials. He generated knowledge that can lead to the development of new drug delivery systems. In addition to this satisfaction, his PhD gave him the gratification of seeing two articles he co-authored on high-impact journal covers. See our interview with Eldroaldo and data about other dissertations related to Materials area which also were awarded by CAPES this year.
2015 “Alfred W. Allen Award” of the American Ceramic Society, to the work of authors from academia and industry – among them, Brazilian Victor Carlos Pandolfelli (UFSCar professor) and Mariana Braulio (Alcoa Aluminio). More.
Work done in Brazil and presented by Mirella Boery (doctoral student at UNICAMP) received the Best Poster Award at IUMRS-ICAM, held in Korea in October this year. More.

XIV SBPMat Meeting: 2,400 abstracts received
The fourteenth edition of the annual meeting of the Brazilian MRS sets a new record in the history of these events, with 2,400 abstracts submitted to its 27 simposia and 2 workshops. Until July 10, the authors of the submitted papers receive their notes of acceptance, rejection or transfer to a different symposium. Know more.
XIV SBPMat Meeting: interviews with plenary speakers

Professor Ichiro Takeuchi, from the University of Maryland (USA), will talk in the SBPMat Meeting about the combinatorial approach in the field of Materials. This methodology, which substantially accelerates the rate of several research processes, has been helping Professor Takeuchi to discover a number of compounds and develop strategies to quickly determine the relation between composition, structure and property in many materials. In an interview with our newsletter, the scientist explains how the combinatorial research works in practice, and lists some of his main contributions to the field. He also discusses a topic of his plenary lecture: the “integrated materials engine”, which combines theory and high-throughput experiments in order to discover new materials. See the interview.

We also interviewed Professor Paul Ducheyne, from the University of Pennsylvania (USA). For about 4 decades, Ducheyne has dedicated himself to the study of biomaterials, field in which he is the author of hundreds of papers summing over 10,000 citations, besides 40 patents and books. In the interview, Ducheyne listed some of his most important contributions to the field, such as explaining how synthetic materials lead to tissue formation. In his plenary talk during the XIV SBPMat Meeting, Ducheyne will obviously address biomaterials; particularly bioactive ceramics with in situ functionalization and sol-gel materials used for the release of drugs and growth factors. See the interview.

 
Featured paper

Analyzing AFM images of hexagonal boron nitride (a two-dimensional material), researchers from Brazil suspected that the nanometric folding pattern, which had formed as a result of annealing, followed a particular order. The scientists carried out a study involving experimental techniques, theory and simulations, and proved they were observing a phenomenon of strain organized in crystallographic directions.  This property, new to two-dimensional materials, may come to be explored by straintronics. The paper has been recently published in Nano Research. See our story about the paper.

In San Francisco, SBPMat president, Roberto Faria, held meetings with authorities of MRS and IUMRS, and with representatives of Institute of Physics. The approached topics were publications, university chapters, and events, among others. Learn more.

 
Featured paper

A team of researchers from Brazil studied the luminescent behavior of a lanthanide ion (the trivalent terbium) as a glass dopant. Among other results, the scientists were able to explain some mechanisms that limit the light emission efficiency of the material. The work was recently reported on the Journal of Applied Physics. SBPMat´s community people

We talked with Fernando Galembeck, director of the Brazilian Nanotechnology National Laboratory and retired UNICAMP professor. Interested since his adolescence in scientific discoveries and their transformation in products, Galembeck made important contributions to the area of Materials, either in academic studies and in works that generated licensed patents and new products. In the interview, the scientist talked about the origins of his scientific career and shared his cases of materials research and development. At the end, he left a message to the youngest readers, highlighting passion as motivation for work. See our interview with the scientist.

Featured paper 

A team of researchers from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul has elucidated physical-chemical mechanisms that occur during the processing of germanium – a promising material as an alternative to silicon in micro and nanoelectronics. The results of the study, which were recently published by the journal Applied Physics Letters, may be applied to develop germanium-based MOSFET and QWFET transistors, in order to improve the electrical properties of such material. See the story.

We interviewed the German physicist Karl Leo, specialist in organic semiconductors. Beyond being the author of more than 550 papers with more than 23,000 citations and 50 families of patents, the scientist has already participated of the creation of 8 spin-off companies. In his lecture at the XIII SBPMat Meeting, Karl Leo will speak on highly efficient organic devices, as OLEDs and solar cells. See our interview with Karl Leo.








We also interviewed the Portuguese physicist Antonio Luis Ferreira Martins Dias Carlos, of the University of Aveiro, who will perform a lecture in our meeting in João Pessoa on luminescence applied to nanomedicine. In the interview, the professor shared with us his most prominent works in the field of Materials. He also told us about some challenges in the area of luminescence for medical applications, both in medical imaging and intra-cellular temperature mapping, and cited examples of applications of luminescent materials that have already been used in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. Featured paper with Brazilian participation






By making small adjustments in the technique of thin film deposition known as magnetron sputtering, a group of scientists obtained the control of the direction of magnetization in the manufacture of spin valves, devices formed by nanometric layers of magnetic and non-magnetic materials used, for example, in the reading of data of hard disks. This work of spintronics, conducted by researchers from Brazil and Chile, has been recently published in Applied Physics Letters.  Read the story.

We interviewed the French scientist Jean-Marie Dubois, specialist in quasicrystals (ordered, but aperiodic structures on solid materials) and pioneer in patenting applications for them. He told us a little about his main contributions to the field of Materials and gave a teaser on the theme of his plenary lecture in the XIII SBPMat Meeting: he will talk about quasicrystal structures, found in metallic alloys, polymers, oxides and artificial nanostructures, and their unprecedented properties. In the picture, Jean-Marie Dubois (on the left) and Dan Shechtman, who received a Nobel Prize in 2011 for the quasicrystals, using equal ties, both decorated with the Penrose tiling, an example of aperiodicity.  Read our interview with Jean-Marie Dubois here.








We also interviewed the Italian chemist Roberto Dovesi, one of the creators of CRYSTAL, a computational tool for ab initio quantum calculations used in the study of several solid materials properties. The CRYSTAL code is currently used in over 350 laboratories around the world.  In his plenary lecture in the XIII SBPMat Meeting, Dovesi will attempt to demonstrate that today quantum simulations may be very useful tools to complement experiments.  Read our interview with Roberto Dovesi here.












Featured paper with Brazilian participation






A group of scientists, coordinated by Brazilian researchers, used a Helium Ion Microscope (HIM) located in Silicon Valley, in the United States,  to engrave nanometric periodic patterns in graphene sheets, giving an innovative use to the instrument. The fast, simple and precise technique could be used by the electronics industry to produce graphene semiconductive devices, which could replace the silicon ones. The lead author of the paper published in Applied Physics Letters told us the story behind the study and announced that, soon, Brazil is going to have its first HIM.  Read the story.

Interviews with plenary speakers






We have interviewed Professor Alberto Salleo, from Stanford University, who is going to give a plenary lecture on organic electronic devices in the XIII SBPMat Meeting. Young, yet holding a career that stands out internationally, Salleo told us about the work conducted by his group, which has been developing a deeper understanding on the role provided by the defects in charge transport in organic semiconductors. He also shared with us his main papers, published in Nature Materials. Finally, Salleo discussed the next challenges and applications on organic electronics, and anticipated what he is going to address in the plenary lecture, which promises to be very informative while mild enough for a wider audience. SBPMat’s community people








Upon his inauguration as a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), we talked to Professor Fernando Lázaro Freire Junior, SBPMat’s former president, financial director and scientific director. Throughout his scientific path, Professor Fernando Lázaro has been specially committed to researching carbon-based materials: DLC films, nanotubes and graphene. The researcher told us how he became a scientist, and commented on his most highlighted contributions to the field of Materials. Having a great portion of his career developed in the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio),  the Professor emphasized, in his message to younger readers: it is possible to do research with an international impact in Brazil. History of SBPMat






We talked again to Professor Fernando Lázaro Freire Junior, President of the society during two turns in a roll, from 2006 to 2009. During such time, SBPMat held, in addition to the 4 annual meetings, with an increasing number of attendees, the International Conference on Advanced Materials (ICAM 2009). It was also in those years that the society organized its office. Professor Fernando Lázaro presented a brief overview on his administration, regretted some pending issues (proximity with members and the interaction with the industry) and, to conclude, said that young people should be more involved in SBPMat’s decisions.
