Zirconia, a very resistant and biocompatible ceramic, has been used in cutting tools, dental implants and several other applications. However, producing high-quality zirconia pieces with complex shapes and using low-cost and sustainable processes is still a challenge. In this study, researchers from USP and UERJ, together with collaborators from the University of Aveiro (Portugal), combined advanced additive manufacturing and sintering techniques to obtain dense zirconia samples in times and temperatures significantly lower than conventional ones. The article, published in Ceramics International, can be accessed here.

A team of researchers from UFRN and Unesp showed that it is possible to treat effluents and, at the same time, produce green hydrogen and chemical products. In the laboratory, they decontaminated water from a washing machine. To do this, they used an electrochemical system developed by them and powered by electrical energy from a solar plant. In the same process, the team converted contaminants into hydrogen and carboxylic acids, which can be used as fuel and industrial chemicals. The full scientific article, published in Electrochemistry Communications, is available here.

Silicon solar cells are efficient at converting visible light into electricity, but not at converting other types of light that come from the Sun. A little explored strategy to improve this situation is to cover the top of the devices with photonic materials capable of managing solar radiation. In this article, researchers from CEETEPS, UPE and USP review the scientific literature on the subject and provide proof of concept with different glasses that, when placed on top of silicon solar cells, can increase their efficiency by up to 18%. The open access article is available here.
