B-MRS Newsletter: Year 11, issue 11

cabeçalho

Year 11, issue 11. December 20, 2024.

End of year message

The year 2024 demonstrated the strength of the Brazilian materials research community, with the B-MRS Meeting held in Santos attracting nearly 1,800 participants from areas ranging from basic to technological sciences. Around 60% of these were undergraduate, master’s or doctoral students, illustrating the importance of the event in bringing together these young scientists and providing opportunities for the dissemination of their research and the establishment of scientific collaborations. Technical lectures and round tables addressed gender issues and encouraged scientific dissemination and entrepreneurship.

B-MRS has contributed to the dissemination of opportunities for researchers and students. The dissemination of papers by the community has illustrated the relevance of the scientific work produced by members of the Society.

In 2025, we hope to strengthen and expand B-MRS University Chapters (UCs), which have weakened during and after the Pandemic. We understand that the UCs represent the future of the Society and can contribute greatly to the training of new generations of scientists in Materials, promoting the inclusion of new students and the scientific dissemination of the area. Professors and students interested in opening a UC at their institution should contact Professor Lucimara Roman (romanlucimara@gmail.com).

The organization of the B-MRS Meeting 2025 is in full swing. The event will be held from September 28 to October 2 in Salvador/BA. There will be 22 scientific symposia in the most varied areas of activity in Materials, in addition to internationally renowned speakers. Do not miss the opportunity to participate in this event.

We wish everyone an excellent 2025, full of personal and professional achievements. May we all contribute to the scientific development of Brazil, to the training of new generations of scientists and to stimulate entrepreneurship.

A team from UFPA, USP and Instituto Tecnológico Vale used nanostructured additive manufacturing to produce a pressure sensor that could be used, for example, in subway door actuators. The researchers developed a nanocomposite based on carbon nanotubes in a polymer matrix and produced the sensor using additive manufacturing, in order to induce changes in electrical resistance in response to pressure received from the environment. Zinc anode batteries are promising candidates for commercialization, as they can combine low cost, sustainability, safety and efficiency. The problem is that a suitable material to act as a cathode in these batteries has not yet been found. In this study, a team of scientists from UFPA, UFS, USP and Swedish institutions investigated three compounds, also based on zinc, to evaluate their potential as cathodes for zinc-ion batteries. Using theoretical calculations, the authors examined the structure, electronic properties and electrolytic performance of these compounds, and listed the advantages and limitations of each one for the desired application. Prof. Edgar Zanotto (DEMa-UFSCar), founding member of B-MRS, was honored with The ICG President’s Award, an award from the International Commission on Glass that distinguishes, every three years, individuals who have stood out in scientific discoveries, engineering developments or artistic achievements in the area of glass materials. Zanotto is the first Latin American to be honored with this award, which was created in 1995.
