4th Workshop to Develop the Global Nanotechnology Network

Background: What is the GNN?

The Global Nanotechnology Network (GNN) is a diverse group of stakeholders from industry, government, and academia dedicated to promoting international cooperation in nanoscale research, education and technology development. Governed by the principles of shared ownership and universal participation, the GNN fosters cooperation between developed and developing regions of the world and serves as a platform for addressing shared global challenges such as energy, environmental protection, health care, and public safety.

The GNN was launched in 2001 with the cooperation and leadership of our colleagues around the world. Three GNN development workshops have been held to date:

1. Cancun, Mexico (2001) - 11 countries represented (Brazil, Canada, China, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Singapore, Taiwan, and the US)
2. Yokohama, Japan (2003) - 15 countries represented (Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, UK, US, and Uzbekistan)
3. Saarbrucken, Germany (2005) - 25 countries plus the European Commission (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, UK, and US.)

These workshops have identified four main GNN program strands: (1) Research; (2) Education; (3) Facilities Sharing; and (4) Database / Cyber-infrastructure Development. The GNN currently includes partners in more than 30 countries and regional networks in the US, Africa, Europe, Asia/Pacific and Middle East.

The 4^th GNN Workshop Goal

Expand Pan-American participation in GNN by establishing a Pan-American Nanotechnology Network.

Program

The workshop will take place on September 22^nd, 09 during the IUMRS-ICAM Conference in Rio, Brazil. The program will include summary reports from nano leaders throughout the Americas, discussion panels, and network planning sessions. A workshop dinner will be organized to allow for further interactions and discussions.
