SYMPOSIUM D
Nanostructured materials: synthesis and characterization of materials with unique properties

Nanoestructured materials present physical and chemical properties completely different from those of the macroscopic and microscopic solids. The investigation of these properties (nanoscience) and applications (nanotechnology) is one of the most stimulating research fields today.  Despite of the interest by the nanoscopic systems, the controlled fabrication and processing represent a challenge for both scientific and technological communities. In many situations, the tools developed for the investigation of atoms and molecules or condensed matter are inadequate for these systems. In this way, specific tools –synthesis, characterization and modeling- for nanoscopic materials are under study, several times in a multidisciplinary approach.

This symposium is planned to bring together scientists from a multitude of disciplines in science and engineering to present and discuss the progress made in these materials and their applications.

Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Synthesis and processing of nanostructured materials, including organic and inorganic nanolayers; phase transformation; self-assembly of nanostructures; organic and inorganic nanotubes; nanocomposites; nanoparticles; nanoporous materials;
  • Nanoelectronics and semiconductors; structure and optoelectronic properties of quantum wells, dots and wires; Synthesis and epitaxy; nanophotonic materials; nanostructured fiber optics.
  • Magnetic nanomaterials; magnetic order in nanoscale; magnetic nanoparticles and nanowires; self-assembly of magnetic particles; thin films and multilayers.
  • Photon, electron and ion based tools and systems for nanoscale processing and characterization of materials; nanometrology; microscopy and spectroscopy for nanoscale characterization; tools for nanomanipulation; nanolithography.
  • Bio-inspired synthesis and processing; nanosystems in biotechnology, including proteins, lipids; etc.
  • Nanoindentation and nanotribology; mechanical properties of nanostructured materials; NEMS.
  • Theory, simulation and modeling of nanostructured materials.

Joint sections with other symposia will be considered.
