As many important properties (e.g., mechanical, electronic, magnetic) of materials in bulk form or at surfaces and interfaces depend sensitively on their nanostructural features, there has been a continuous quest for improved methods of examination of nanostructures. Notably, X-rays, thermal neutrons, and electrons may serve to probe materials on the nanoscale. After a short comparison of the basic features of the three types of radiation, examples of recent applications will be given. Especially, small-angle scattering and diffuse scattering applications in the fields of phase separation on the nanoscale, growth and assembly of nanostructures on surfaces, and coupling of chemical and magnetic inhomegeneities will be presented, emphasizing the progress in spatial and temporal resolution achieved in recent years. Many details of nanostructured materials may now be analyzed with great precision.
