Scientific Program

SYMPOSIUM G
SYNCHROTRON RADIATION IN MATERIALS SCIENCE

This Symposium aims at bringing together researchers that currently apply synchrotron radiation based experimental techniques to materials science and technology, using synchrotron facilities located in Brazil and abroad. The goal is to provide an overview of their latest accomplishments related to a broad range of materials, including inorganic materials as well as biomaterials and polymers.
Recent synchrotron based investigations of electronic, atomic, molecular and supramolecular structures of nanostructured materials will be presented and discussed. Particular attention will be addressed to the applications of synchrotron radiation techniques to advanced materials with potential industrial interest, such as electronic and photonic materials, catalysts, magnetic alloys, amorphous materials, sol-gel based materials including precursor colloidal solutions, engineering materials, and others.

Special attention will also be addressed to:

  • in situ (time resolved) studies of structure transformations;
  • mapping (space resolved) analyses of structural and electronic properties;
  • investigations of electronic and structural properties of surfaces, interfaces and solid thin films, for which synchrotron radiation based techniques have demonstrated to be particularly useful tools.

This Symposium will also deal with recent theoretical and experimental developments associated to different synchrotron based experimental techniques, such as X-ray spectroscopy (EXAFS, XANES), X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), X-ray contrast and phase based imaging techniques, and soft X-ray and VUV photoelectron spectroscopies.

The Symposium will consist of invited lectures and submitted communications. Selected submitted communications will be presented orally and the others in a poster session.

Papers from this Symposium will be published in a Special Issue of Journal of Materials Science

To be considered for this special issue, the Brazilian MRS paper number should precede the title of the paper on the manuscript. This number will be removed before publication.

The submission window for full manuscripts will be October 1 until November 30, 2006.

1) Go to www.editorialmanager.com/jmsc/
2) Follow Instructions for Authors
3) Be sure to select "Brazil MRS 2006" for your submission category

Journal of Materials Science Editors Grant Norton, Mark Aindow and Barry Carter will be present at the meeting to answer any questions.

All papers will be fully reviewed in the usual way. Symposia chairs will be sent a copy of each submitted paper
