About Recife

Recife, capital of Pernambuco, is one of the largest cities of the Northeast region and is one of the state capitals with the strongest personality in Brazil. Its name was derived from the Portuguese word for reef, referring simply to the city's situation behind a long and protective coral reef. Recife is an exciting city with many bridges built over the Capibaribe and Beberibe rivers that run through the town to meet the sea at Pina and Boa Viagem beaches. Influenced by the Portuguese and the Dutch in the colonial period, as well as by African and native cultures, Recife art tradition is unique with colourful handcrafts, vibrant musics and dances. In the old part of the city, baroque churches and palaces with their gilt carvings, coexists side-by-side with the riverfront houses. In the seventeenth century the sugarcane plantation made Recife one of the wealthiest cities in Brazil. Today, Recife is a very attractive tourist city on the Northeast coast of Brazil, with several historical sites, shopping options, museums, galleries, theatres, restaurants and lively nightlife. Another attraction is the neighbour city of Olinda with its baroque style that attracts thousands of tourists every year and which is considered a Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO. The beautiful nearby beaches of Porto de Galinhas, Gaibu, Calhetas, Tamandaré, Itamaracá island and several others are not be missed.
