Workshop in semiconductor Spintronics

Description

Recent advances in crystal growth techniques have allowed the production of new materials and hybrid structures exhibiting interesting magnetic properties, on top of the extremely versatile semiconductor platform. A remarkable example is provided by the so-called Dilute Magnetic Semiconductors (DMS), which show ferromagnetic behavior, opening the road to exploit spin-polarized transport. Novel structures and devices have been proposed exploring the manipulation of the spin degree of freedom of the charge carriers. The search for processes leading to efficient spin injection and relatively long coherence times has been one of the key issues. The purpose of this workshop is to stimulate further discussions on these topics, as well as to encourage new experimental and theoretical ventures, by bringing together international experts and Brazilian scientists working in this field.

Format

The program consists of 20-30 min. talks and a poster session, with focus on semiconductor spintronics. The latter aims at allowing an exchange of information between students and researchers, giving opportunity to establish an efficient network of collaborative effort.

The workshop will include, but not will be limited to, the following topics:

  • Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors: GeMn, SiMn, GaMnAs;

  • Materials for semiconductor spintronics – growth;

  • Spin polarized transport: break junctions, quantum dots;

  • Spintronic devices;

  • Viable interfaces to semiconductors;

  • Theory and novel devices/concepts utilizing spins/decoherence.
