In the year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Brazilian Materials Research Society (SBPMat) we also celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Conference and this time, after 2 years without meeting, the event will be IN-PERSON.

The Brazilian Materials Research Society (B-MRS) and the Organizing Committee of the XX Brazilian MRS meeting invite the worldwide community of materials research to attend the 2022 Meeting that will be held at the Rafain Palace Hotel in Iguassu Falls, Paraná, from 25th to 29th September. This traditional forum will be dedicated to recent advances and perspectives in materials science and technology. This will be an opportunity to bring together scientists, engineers, and students from academy and industry discussing state-of-the art Materials Science discoveries and perspectives.

FINE CHARACTERIZATION OF NANOSCALE MATERIALS BY TEM METHODS

The continuously increasing interest in nanomaterials has pushed characterization methods to astonishing performance during the last decades. In particular, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has made remarkable progress for a wide range of aspects: electron optics, spatial resolution, detector quantum efficiency, reproducibility and instrument automation. Scanning transmission electron microscopes (STEMs) can routinely acquire different analytical spectroscopic signals or even a whole scattering pattern at each pixel, generating huge 3D or 4D data sets containing millions of elements. The exploration of these new instruments with outstanding analytical resources requires TEM experiments to be designed to derive “quantitative” interpretation. This should cover all TEM available measurements such as structural (image and/or diffraction) and spectroscopic studies. Certainly, the obtainment of quantitative results requires more effort both in experiment planning and data processing compared to traditional qualitative studies; but this is essential to discriminated between available models and generate a much robust physico-chemical understanding of nanomaterials. Here we will present some recent results on quantitative structural and chemical characterization of nanosystems (semiconductor nanowires and metal nanoparticles). We will describe some structural refinement approaches based on the exploration of precession electron diffraction (PED) and electron-based pair distribution function (e-PDF). Also, we will show how machine learning data processing can be used to improve signal-to-noise ratio and improve quantitative x-ray (EDS) chemical analysis of few-nm-wide nanoparticles both from the point of view of accuracy and precision.

Daniel Ugarte is Professor at the Institute of Physics, Univ. Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil. He obtained his PhD at the Université Paris-Sud. After a postdoc at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, he joined the Brazilian National Synchrotron Lab (LNLS, Brazil) in 1993. In 2004, he moved to the Institute of Physics Gleb Wataghin, Univ. Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP). His activities have been related with the experimental study of structural and electronic properties of nanoscale systems, mainly using electron microscopy methods. He has published about 110 journal papers; his articles have received ~18.000 citations. He has given about 100 invited talks in prestigious international conferences among them APS March Meeting, MRS Fall Meeting, Gordon Conf., etc. He received several national and international awards among them Guggenheim Fellowship (USA, 2002), Latsis (Switzerland, 1994), TWAS Prize in Physics in 2018. He was elected member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in 2012 and of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in 2019.

1) Cancellation policy
Requests until August 15th, will receive 70% refund. The cancellation can be made directly in the conference website. Refunds will be paid until 60 days after the conference.

After August 15th, no refunds allowed. However, the registration fee may be transferred to another attendee. The no-show at the conference does not imply the automatic cancellation of the registration.

Please refer to the following guidelines for your accurate abstract submission.
You are required to submit abstract via Online Submission System directly.
Please register as a new user first, then you can login into the Online Submission System.
Before the submission, please select your preferred type of presentation (Oral/Poster).
The accepted presentation and type will be notified after review process accordingly.

Please note: The payment of the registration fee can be made at any time up to the event date, according to the rates specified in our website.

Abstracts must be written in English and submitted electronically. Each author can present and submit only 2 abstracts. There is no limit for the number of abstracts in co-authorship.
Abstracts must contain only the text with the title, authors, affiliations, acknowledgments and references (maximum of 3) filled out directly on the site, using also resources of copy-paste. The abstract, acknowledgements and references will be submitted jointly and must contain a maximum of 2000 characters, including spaces. Do not leave blank lines between the abstract, acknowledgments and references. A processed abstract example for the abstract is shown at the end of this page. After submission, please check if the pdf file created by the system follows the suggested format, otherwise your abstract may be invalidated.
All abstracts will be evaluated considering its technical-scientific characteristics, innovating aspects and the quality of the text. The abstracts will be either accepted for oral contribution, poster contribution or rejected. The preference of the author by the type of presentation (oral or poster) should be informed at the time of electronic submission of the abstract. However, the final decision will be made by the evaluation committee.
The accepted abstracts will be allocated in the XX B-MRS Program in their respective symposia or in poster sessions. Once the final program is available, the authors will have a deadline to report any changes in schedules of presentations. After this period and during the event, NO change in presentation schedule will be allowed.
If the author is a student and wants to apply for the Student Award for best contributed work, an extended abstract of up to 3 pages in A4 format MUST be submitted in addition to the conference abstract, and edited according to the instructions of the attached template. The extended abstract should include title, authors, affiliation and text containing: abstract, introduction, experimental procedure, results and discussion, conclusions, acknowledgments and references, figures and / or tables with captions. The upload of this extended abstract must be done in PDF format, upon receipt of the acceptance of work.

Plenary lectures, invited lectures and oral contributions must be presented in English.

Bernhard Gross Award

Bernhard Gross Award: was established by B-MRS in honor of the pioneer of Brazilian materials research Bernhard Gross. The quality of extended abstracts and presentation as well as the scientific contribution will be all considered as criteria for granting the award. The best works of each Symposium (1 oral and 1 poster), submitted by graduate and undergraduate students, will be awarded by the XX B-MRS.

ACS Award

ACS Award: The five best posters and the five best oral presentations will receive the "ACS Publications Best Poster Prize" and the "ACS Publications Best Oral Presentation Prize" respectively. The prizes will consist of R$ 2.000,00 for each winning work, in addition to the certificate.

Royal Society of Chemistry Award

Royal Society of Chemistry Award: three posters and three oral presentations will receive the "RSC Publications Poster Prize" and the "RSC Publications Oral Presentation Prize" respectively. The Winners will receive a £200 book voucher prize for each winning work, in addition to the certificate.
